Thank you, Krista, for writing and sharing that you are in recovery. You are one of the fortunate ones and I am so glad to hear you are sober for 2 1/2 years.

  2. Carolyn S. Morgan says:

I have a 27 year old granddaughter with two small children and her sister, 24 years old, who are both addicted and living very destructive lives. I am so worried. I want to get them into treatment, Baker Act and/or Marchman Act, but I don’t know where they are. They are somewhere in Pinellas County. Probably working in a strip joint.

The 27 year old’s husband tried to Baker Act her and all the police did was help her remove the last TV from the house so she could hock it to buy drugs.

    Do you have any suggestions.

    Signed: desperate grandmother

    Jen will always be remembered.

  5. Lindsay Messenger Maxedon says:

I used to go to school and cheer with Jen before I moved to Knoxville, TN. in 93′. I was so sad to hear about your loss. Jen was always that friend that could pick you up when you were down or just having a bad day. She was a very brave person, especially during her surgery. She will be missed everyday by those who she touched.

  6. Karen Foye says:

My son Josh I caught shooting up. He started acting out when he was 19 years old & he is 23 now. He called his dad & I as we were getting ready for bed & said, “I understand now, the world will end tomorrow. I have to go kill someone.” Josh was on cocaine & acid. We had him Baker Acted, but Circles of Care released him in less than 12 hours. Before we got there he was trying to rape the girl “his so called friend” sent over.
I put a restraining order on him when I found him shooting up & a Marchment Act. He left after 30 minutes, when the sheriff picked him up, because Circles of Care told him it was voluntary program, but they would have to notify the judge. We asked the judge to re-instate the Marchment Act. It is just my daughter & myself, and Josh is huffing, shooting, taking mushrooms & just about anything he can find, in addition he steals from me. Josh has knocked over a Lazy Boy chair, and threatened both his sister & me.

Dear Ms. Foye, I am sorry to hear about your son, Josh and his drug use. I would say to you, please do not hesitate to call 911 if and when Josh is out of control or threatening you or anyone in your family. This exact situation that you just described about already filing Baker Act and Marcman Act petitons is WHY we need The Jennifer Act! My bill makes 15 improvements to the Marchman Act. I urge you to please contact your FL. Senators, FL. Representatives, FL. Gov. Scott and the media and tell them WHY we need this bill to pass in FL. Help can come to addicted citizens like Josh with this bill in place. If I can do anything, please let me know.

  7. Claudette Mastromarino says:

We have a grandson with a drug problem,
but there doesn’t seem to be an help
available in the state of Florida. No one
seems to know exactly what can be done
or what should be done. We end up going
    around in circles.
Right now, it is all up to him whether he
decides to get help on his own, and what
    to get off drugs.

Florida has 2 bills: The Baker Act for a person who is suicidal or threatening to harm themselves or others and the Marchman Act (which I am proposing to make 15 improvements to with The Jennifer Act bill.) Those are the only 2 options FL. has to offer as help for someone who will not volunteer to go into treatment on their own. Most addicts don’t go on their own will power. They are too addicted and too impaired to make that decision for themselves. They fear the physical detox, which is very much like the worse flu symptoms ever to endure. It is a host of symptoms including chills, sweats, vomiting, diarrhea, runny nose, itching skin or the feeling of their skin crawling. It makes their whole body hurt. This is why most addicts stay addicted. They do not want to be “dope sick”. Ask any addict, they will tell you the same. Please write to FL. Gov. Scott, your local FL. Senators and Fl Legislatures and tell them WHY we need The Jennifer Act bill to pass in FL. It will save lives. It will only change when the state elected officials do something to change it.

    Hi Sharon,

It was truly a pleasure meeting with you, and thank you for sharing a deeply personal and painful chapter in your life–the passing of your beloved daughter, Ms. Jennifer.

I’ll leave you with the scripture I shared with you earlier today, as well as another one yet this week:

God is not unjust; He will not forger your work and the love you have shown him as you have helped his peopled and continue to help them Heb. 6:10 &

As you do not know the pateh of the wind, or how the body is formed in a mother’s womb, so you cannot understand the work of God, the Maker of all things.
    Ecc. 11:5

    Keep going–in His strength ‘)

    Jackie

I lost my son on 6/24/10 to an accidental oxycodone overdose..he was sober for 6 weeks when he tried it “one” more time…this one more time took his life..he died in my bathroom and I found him.. Life is so difficult now….to anyone suffering from addiction..get help…don’t try that one more time…we did all we could to help our son..tough love, called the police many many times and they kept letting him out…he overdosed 2 other times and after 2 hours the hospital released him…something has to be done and Sharon I admire you so for your hard work and courage to try to make a difference…What a wonderful woman you are…

  14. Ann Vairo says:

I’m so glad you are trying to cut all the red tape. It is so very hard to find the right information to help all people who are addicted. This act is so needed. I thank God for all your efforts to get this passed. We are in need of courageous people like you. I believe with God all things are possible. I will pray for the passage of this act.
